A web search of "sustainability" and "sustainable development" will yield many interpretations. Whilst Sustainable South Brent was born from a desire to take positive action to address the twin challenges of fossil fuel depletion and climate change, these are just two symptons of a global economic system that, due to natural resource constraints, cannot continue for ever.

Sustainable South Brent's Articles of Association reflect this broader concern, with a definition of "sustainable development" based on that of the Brundtland Commission.

In 1987, the UN released the Brundtland Report, which included what is now one of the most widely recognised definitions:

"Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." It contains within it two key concepts:

  • the concept of 'needs', in particular the essential needs of the world's poor, to which overriding priority should be given; and
  • the idea of limitations imposed by the state of technology and social organization on the environment's ability to meet present and future needs.

Sustainable development ties together concern for the carrying capacityof natural systemswith the social challenges facing humanity. As early as the 1970s "sustainability" was employed to describe an economy"in equilibrium with basic ecological support systems". Ecologists have pointed to the book "The Limits to Growth" and presented the alternative of a steady state economy in order to address environmental concerns.

Why "Community Energy"?

The domestic energy bill for South Brent has been estimated at around £1.5M for the electricity, gas, oil, and coal we use. Almost all of this money leaves the parish, the county, and a lot of it leaves the country. It also gives rise to over 13,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year. If we can agree a way to generate some of this power from our renewables resources in Brent we will reduce our carbon footprint and help support our local economy.
