Bike Bank and Cycle Rides

Join us on an Evening  bike ride to Rattery starting from South Brent Old School Community Centre, at 6.30pm, following National Route 2 along quiet scenic lanes to Rattery where we'll stop for refreshments at the local inn. The route is about 5 miles each way and of moderate difficulty with some hills. Led by Sustrans volunteers in partnership with Sustainable South Brent. The ride is open to anyone but you need to be reasonably fit, be prepared for changeable weather and bring some lights. For more details and to register for the ride, go to www.sustrans.org.uk/events/guided-evening-bike-ride-south-brent-devon.

Sunday 6 August 2017: Two Rivers Challenge Guided Bike Ride from 10:00am to 3:00pm: Are you up for a challenge? Join the fantastic Sustrans and PL21 Transition Town Initiative volunteers for an Ivybridge guided bike ride that you won't forget. Leaving from the Watermark Centre, Leonards Road, Ivybridge PL21 0SZ at 10.00am, this is no ordinary cycle ride as you will need to bring flip flops and be prepared to ford a river and cross a sand bar! The 25 mile circular ride will follow National Cycle Route 28 and similar quiet rural lanes and roads, passing through small hidden villages and an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty to enjoy some of South Hams beautiful countryside and coastline. We will cycle along a tidal road and cross the estuary of the River Erme at Mothecombe at low tide. We will stop for refreshments en route. The route is of moderate difficulty and a short length will also include an unmade road where walking may be necessary. For this ride we recommend bikes should be cross-country or similar type and e-bikes are not suitable. The ride is suitable for children age 11 years and over provided they are supervised by their parents. The idea behind this ride goes back Sustrans founder, John Grimshaw, who had wanted it to be on the National Cycle Network. For more details and to register for the ride, go to www.sustrans.org.uk/events/two-rivers-challenge-guided-bike-ride-ivybridge.

[NB. A start from South Brent could be arranged, but due to tides it would need to be at 9.15am. Please contact Graham Wilson - This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. by Thursday 3 August if you would be interested in this.]

More small group  bike rides are being planned during 2017 starting in (or with a joining point in, or near to) South Brent, led by Sustrans volunteers in partnership with Sustainable South Brent. There will be rides for less experienced cyclists including families with children and some more challenging rides for more experienced riders (anyone with an electric bike would also be welcome). The SSB Bike Bank cycles will be available for free loan, on a first come basis (see SSB link).

The South Brent Bike Bank was established by SSB in 2015 as a community resource offering a free lease of a bike for up to 7 days and promoting sustainable transport in and around South Brent. The bikes are ideal for new riders as they are easy to use and well suited to Devon being light and with plenty of gears for those hills. Each lease includes helmet, gloves and lights to get you on the road as well as a support pack full of advice, tips for new cyclists, links to cycling organisations in the area and maps.

The Bike Bank is currently only open to adults of 18 and over.

To borrow a bike you must register on the scheme. To register:

  • Complete the registration on line
  • Or download and complete a document registration form (574 KB) and email it to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
  • Or complete a paper registration form from the envelope on the SSB notice board in the lobby of the Old School Community Centre and place it in the envelope marked 'Completed registration forms'

Once you have registered, further instructions will be emailed to you and you will be able to choose and book out a bike from the green, secure cycle store at the Old School Community Centre.
